By Athena Boulgarides, Founder and CEO, HappyTails Canine Wellness, Inc.
Every day, folks ask me why I founded HappyTails Canine Wellness.
We are dancing on this earth for such a short time so what we choose to do with that time is our greatest gift to ourselves, our families, and the world. Therefore, in the spirit of my ancient Greek forefather Diogenes, I bring you my lantern in broad daylight.
The field of biotics and the scientific community’s understanding of the canine microbiome is advancing with unprecedented speed, and it’s leading the world to the glorious truth that we all know so well…You Are What You Eat!
Over the last few decades thousands of studies have been conducted, by researchers, universities, and private industry, that have provided ample evidence to support the role that nutrition, the microbiome and biotics play in canine illness and cancer prevention.
The evidence is not only encouraging but is opening the door to broader studies that are supporting a scientific consensus.
Can this be the way forward, and through, the insidious morass of cancer prevention?
This is why I founded HappyTails Canine Wellness and invited the most brilliant folks I could find to help us achieve our mission of optimal wellness for our canine companions.
We now have at our fingertips the technology, tools, and sheer will to develop products that optimize immune function and promote the prevention of illness for as long as possible. Therefore, HappyTails Canine Wellness is leading the product innovation evolution with our functional treats and nutritional supplements that are scientifically formulated and backed by a growing scientific consensus.
In this blog series I will share some of the most important studies, from around the world, that provides evidence to support the key roles that the microbiome, nutrition, and biotics play in canine illness and cancer prevention, along with brief summaries.
Let's get started!
There are two articles I would like to share with you now. The first is by Moshi Khurshid, Associate Professor at Government College University Faisalabad, Pakistan. His study, Gut Microbiota and Probiotics: Current Status and Their Role in Cancer Therapeutics. His paper posits that, “Probiotics can also have a significant impact on cancer management.”
Moshi and his team also share how probiotics can help prevent cancer through mechanisms like increased immune cell activity, the reduction of gut dysbiosis, and the reduction of carcinogens in the intestines.
The second study was conducted with our Chief Science and Technology Officer Dr. Greg Sunvold entitled, Portrait of a canine probiotic Bifidobacterium—From gut to gut. In it, Dr. Sunvold shares how various strains of probiotics impact the canine microbiome, and why spore forming probiotics are a powerful illness prevention tool.
